Influenced by Claude Lévi-Strauss, Vernant developed a structuralist approach to Greek myth, tragedy, and society which would itself be influential among classical scholars. Zusammen mit Pierre Vidal-Naquet war Vernant einer der Hauptvertreter der so genannten Pariser Schule, die die griechische Antike auf der Basis einer strukturanthropologischen und sozialwissenschaftlichen Gesamtgrundlage zu erfassen sucht. Mit seinen unkonventionellen interdisziplinären Arbeiten hat er international große Beachtung gefunden. Jean-Pierre Vernant war Mitglied der Jeunesse communiste und später der Kommunistischen Partei Frankreichs (PCF). Er beteiligte sich an der Résistance während des 2. Weltkriegs. Aus der PCF trat Vernant im Jahr 1970 aus.
