- Jean-Claude Izzo (June 20, 1945 - January 1, 2000) was a French poet, playwright, screenwriter, and novelist who achieved sudden fame in the mid-1990s with the publication of his three detective novels, Total Chaos, Chourmo, and Solea, widely known as the Marseilles Trilogy, featuring as protagonist ex-cop Fabio Montale, and set in the author's native city of Marseille. All have been translated into English by Howard Curtis. Jean-Claude Izzo was born on June 20, 1945 in Marseille, France. His father was an Italian immigrant and his maternal grandfather was a Spanish immigrant. He excelled in school and spent much of his time at his desk writing stories and poems. But because of his “immigrant” status, he was forced into a technical school where he was taught how to operate a lathe. In 1963, he began work in a bookstore. He also actively campaigned on behalf of Pax Christi, a Catholic peace movement. Then, in 1964, he was called up for military duty in Toulon and Djibouti. He worked for the military newspaper as a photograph and journalist.

- Nel 1993 pubblicò sulla rivista Gulliver un racconto che costituirà la base del suo primo romanzo Casino totale (Total Khéops) il quale, su insistenza di Michel Le Bris e Patrick Raynal, venne pubblicato nel 1995 nella Série Noire di Gallimard. Il libro si rivela presto un grande successo vincendo numerosi premi. È l'inizio della trilogia marsigliese, con protagonista e voce narrante Fabio Montale. Fabio Montale è il personaggio che meglio caratterizza lo stile di Izzo, e che interpreta perfettamente il Noir Mediterraneo, stile che proprio il suo autore ha creato. Inizia la trilogia come poliziotto, la finisce da uomo che vive e gode la sua città di un amore viscerale e critico, ma guarda al mondo con una lucidità totale. L'anno successivo, pubblicò Chourmo. Il cuore di Marsiglia (Chourmo), il secondo episodio della trilogia, e lasciò Parigi per Saint-Malo con la sua nuova compagna Laurence Rio. Furono questi anni di intensa produzione letteraria. Nel 1997 infatti, oltre alla raccolta di poesie Loin de tous rivages e a numerosi racconti in varie antologie, pubblicò anche il romanzo Marinai perduti (Les Marins Perdus) e tornò a vivere definitivamente in Provenza andando ad abitare a Ceyreste. Nel 1998, pubblicò Solea (Soléa), l'ultimo capitolo della trilogia, nonostante le insistenze dell'editore che avrebbe voluto allungare la serie. Iniziò inoltre la stesura de Il sole dei morenti (Le soleil des mourants). In maggio terminò anche il suo rapporto con Laurence Rio. Pochi mesi dopo conobbe la fotografa Catherine Bouretz che sposò nel febbraio 1999. Fu lei ad illustrare la raccolta di poesie L'Aride des jours. I segni della malattia (un cancro al polmone) si fanno sempre più forti; nonostante questo Izzo non solo portò a termine "Il sole dei morenti" (pubblicato in settembre), ma partecipò a numerosi avvenimenti letterari. Neppure la morte - il 26 gennaio 2000 - ha interrotto il successo dei suoi romanzi che, anzi, continuano a trovare sempre nuovi estimatori.

Pracował w wojskowej gazecie jako fotograf i dziennikarz. Izzo wydał kilka tomików poezji. Osiągnął jednak sławę jako prozaik w połowie lat 90' pisząc trylogię(zwaną "trylogią marsylską"), na którą składają się: "Total Cheops","Szurmo" i "Solea". Wszystkie trzy książki są powieściami detektywistycznymi poświęconymi Marsylii - ukochanemu miastu pisarza, w którym się urodził oraz zostały wydane m. in. w polskim tłumaczeniu. W roku 2002 na podstawie "Total Cheops" powstał film, którego reżyserem był Alain Bévérini, oraz serial telewizyjny.
