  • Gerald Alphonse "Jay" Witasick, Jr. is a free agent Major League Baseball relief pitcher. He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2nd round of the 1993 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his major league debut on July 7, 1996 as a member of the A's versus the California Angels. Since then, Witasick has been mainly used as a middle-reliever and, in addition to the A's and Devil Rays, he has played for the Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, and Colorado Rockies. In his time with the New York Yankees, he may be most infamous for allowing nine runs in one and two-thirds innings in Game 6 of the 2001 World Series. On June 2, 2007, Witasick was designated for assignment by the A's and released on June 7, 2007. He felt that he wasn't getting enough work out of the bullpen for the A's. On June 12, he was signed to a one-year deal by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Following the season on October 25, 2007, the Devil Rays released him. He has not played since and is currently considering retirment, but has strongly tried to avoid that option. Jay joined the Harford Community College baseball team as an assistant coach for the 2009 season.
