Jan Morris CBE is a British historian, author and travel writer. Morris was educated at Lancing College, West Sussex, and Christ Church, Oxford, but is Welsh by heritage and adoption. Before 1970 Morris published under her former name, "James Morris", and is known particularly for the Pax Britannica trilogy, a history of the British Empire, and for portraits of cities, notably Oxford, Venice, Trieste, Hong Kong, and New York City, and has also written about Wales, Spanish history and culture.

Hon började redan på 1950-talet att ta kvinnliga hormonpreparat, i väntan på en fullbordande könskorrigerande operation. År 1972 genomgick hon slutligen en sådan på en klinik i Marocko. Därefter kunde hon också byta namn till Jan. Hon levde fram till dess med en kvinnlig livskamrat, Elizabeth, som hon har flera barn tillsammans med. Under en tid bodde hela familjen på en herrgård, Trefan, i Llanystumdwy i norra Wales. Efter att barnen flyttat ut, sålde Jan denna herrgård (liksom för övrigt en Rolls-Royce) och flyttade istället in i ett mindre hus nära herrgården. Det nya huset gav hon namnet Trefan Morys (Morys är den walesiska formen av Morris). Där bor hon än idag (2005).
