James Whitney Young is an American astronomer with significant contributions to the field of asteroid research. After nearly 47 years with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at their Table Mountain Facility, Young retired July 16, 2009. A very prolific asteroid observer of both physical properties and astrometric positions, he has discovered some 390 main belt asteroids in the last six years, as well as two NEOs, two Trojan asteroids, three Mars crossers,, and one extra-galactic supernova.
