James McHenry (November 16, 1753–May 3, 1816) was an early American statesman. McHenry was a signer of the United States Constitution from Maryland and the namesake of Fort McHenry, the bombardment of which inspired the American national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner". He was also a delegate to the Continental Congress from Maryland, and the third United States Secretary of War from January 27, 1796 to May 13,1800, under Presidents George Washington and John Adams.

- James McHenry was een Amerikaans politicus. Hij is één van de 39 ondertekenaars van de Grondwet van de Verenigde Staten. McHenry vestigde zich in 1771 in Pennsylvania waar hij als arts werkzaam was. Later zou hij zich in Baltimore vestigen waar hij een bedrijf oprichtte, samen met zijn broer. Tijdens de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog diende hij onder generaal George Washington en was hij onder andere aanwezig bij de Slag bij Monmouth waar hij een medische functie vervulde. Hij was tevens delegatielid tijdens de Continental Congress namens Marylandtussen 1783 en 1785 en in 1787 ondertekende hij de Grondwet. In het kabinet van president Washington was McHenry vanaf 1796 Secretary of War (Minister van Defensie -Oorlog-). John Adams handhaafde hem in die positie tot en met 1800. Naar hem werd Fort McHenry vernoemd.
