He received a M.A. from Northern Illinois University in 1976. He received a Ph.D. from Duke University in 1979. He received a J.D. from the University of Arkansas in 1982. He was a law clerk, Hon. Frank Holt, Supreme Court of Arkansas from 1982 to 1983. He was in private practice in Little Rock, Arkansas, 1983-1990 from 1992 to 2004.
