He was a Member of Parliament for Shaftesbury, Hastings, Marlborough, and Great Bedwin before inheriting the earldom from his brother, George Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu, the 4th Earl of Cardigan, in 1790. He also held the positions of Deputy Cofferer to the Household; Master of Robes to the Prince of Wales, who acceded as King George III; Keeper of the Privy Purse; and subsequently Constable of Windsor Castle and Steward of Windsor. He married Anne Legge in 1760 who died in 1786. He then married Elizabeth Waldegrave in 1791. He died in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, London. The title then passed to his nephew, Robert Brudenell, 6th Earl of Cardigan, son of Robert Brudenell. Among his other titles were 1st Baron Brudenell of Deene, 5th Baron Brudenell of Stonton, and 5th Baronet Brudenell of Deene. The Barony Brudenell of Deene ceased following his death.
