James Rufus Agee (November 27, 1909 – May 16, 1955) (pronounced AY-jee) was an American author, journalist, poet, screenwriter and film critic. In the 1940s, he was one of the most influential film critics in the U.S. His autobiographical novel, A Death in the Family, won the author a posthumous Pulitzer Prize.

Il achèvera ses études à l'Université de Harvard. Au cours de l'été 1936, le groupe de presse Time-Life charge James Agee, accompagné du photographe Walker Evans, d'effectuer un reportage sur les Blancs pauvres de l'Alabama. Pendant six semaines, Agee et Evans côtoient trois familles de métayers misérables. Le texte que propose Agee à son commandiataire, dès son retour à New-York, est refusé. Il deviendra finalement un livre parfaitement inclassable, cri d'indignation et de colère en faveur de ces victimes de la Grande dépression, publié en 1940 sous le titre : Louons maintenant les grands hommes. En 1942, il devient critique de film pour le Time et écrit parfois aussi quelques critiques de livres. En 1948, il quitte ce métier pour devenir écrivain indépendant. Il meurt le 16 mai 1955, à New-York, dans un taxi qui l'amenait chez le médecin. Il était âgé de 45 ans. Étrangement, son père est mort aussi le 16 mai.
