The Jakhanke people are a Manding-speaking tribe from the Senegambia region constituting a specialized caste of professional Muslim clerics and educators. Although technically considered members of the Soninke ethnic group, the Jakhanke prefer to be called Serakulle. Since the fifteenth century the Jakhanke clerical communities have constituted an integral part of region and excercised a disproportionate level of economic and religious influence upon the society.
