Der S-Type (1999−2008) war ausschließlich als viertürige Limousine erhältlich und wurde in der Leserwahl Die besten Autos der deutschen Fachzeitschrift Auto, Motor und Sport sieben Mal in Folge als bester Importwagen der oberen Mittelklasse ausgezeichnet. Eine grundlegende Modellpflege erfolgte im Jahr 2002. Dabei wurde der Innenraum, insbesondere das Armaturenbrett, neu bzw. hochwertiger gestaltet. Auch die Technik des S-Type wurde zu diesem Zeitpunkt in einigen Punkten verbessert. Beispielsweise kam seitdem ein 6-Stufen-Automatikgetriebe des deutschen Herstellers ZF zum Einsatz. Zudem wurde erstmals das Topmodell S-Type R mit Kompressoraufladung eingeführt. Der V8 wurde gleichzeitig von 4,0 auf 4,2 Liter Hubraum vergrößert. Der ebenfalls 2002 dem X-Type entliehene 2,5 Liter-V6 wurde jedoch nach nur gut drei Jahren wieder aus dem Programm genommen. Im Jahr 2004 wurde der S-Type nochmals leicht überarbeitet. So erhielt zum Beispiel das Heck eine leicht veränderte Form und neue Rückleuchten. Zusätzlich wurde der 2,7 Liter Dieselmotor eingeführt. Weiterhin wurde seit diesem Facelift die Motorhaube aus Aluminium, statt wie zuvor aus Stahl gefertigt. Mit dem Modelljahr 2008 wurde der S-Type von seinem Nachfolger Jaguar XF abgelöst. La vettura era disponibile con motore da 3,4 o 3,8 L sei cilindri in linea, quest'ultimo era l'unica motorizzazione disponibile negli Stati Uniti. Nel 1966 un profondo restyling (nuovo frontale in stile 420 G e varie migliorie ad interni e carrozzeria), diede vita, unitamente all'adozione del motore maggiorato a 4,2 liri, alla 420. Da questo modello venne realizzata dalla Daimler Motor Company una versione più lussuosa, la Sovereign. Questa fu la prima volta che la Daimler utilizzava su una sua vettura un motore prodotto dalla Jaguar e rimarchiato Daimler e non uno di sua produzione.
