Hawara came back into limelight, in 2004, when he escaped from maximum security jail at Burail, along with 2 other Sikh millitants (Jagtar Singh Tara & Paramjit Singh Bheora), the third one was a cook. The assassination of Beant Singh was condoned on the basis of his "shoot-to-kill" policy of the early 1990s, which was widely blamed for the extra-judicial killing of thousands of Sikh youth.
