- JSP Records is a record label founded in 1978 by John Stedman (John Stedman Promotions). Based in London, England it predominantly releases remastered CDs of public domain jazz and blues recordings. JSP's releases typically undergo extensive and very expensive manual cleanup meaning that they have become renowned for good quality releases. Often, a lot of their releases of older music are recordings for which no master exists, meaning they have to be taken from contemporary record releases. In the case of the old Paramount recordings the original records were made from Shellac which made them unusually susceptible to damage. JSP's releases from this material are the best for these recordings and have won many international awards. For vintage studio recordings from the late 20s or 30s, however, the sound is guaranteed to be absolutely stunning and invariably better than the efforts of other re-issue labels(which often have restricted budgets or little knowledge of or interest in the music). Their release of Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Sevens recordings is often considered to be one of the most essential jazz releases available. Their releases of Django Reinhardt's old recordings are considered to be the best in terms of quality. These sets are prime examples of a format which JSP almost singlehandedly created, the 4 or 5 CD box set of high quality re-issue material at a budget price. This format revolutionised the re-issue market and subsequently the full price single CD re-issue of vintage musical material is now recognised for the overpriced exploitation that it is. The label has an extensive catalog of original recordings. The recording program commenced in 1978 with artists such as Professor Longhair, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Witherspoon and Eddie Cleanhead Vinson and still continues to this day with Lucky Peterson and other cutting edge contemporary artists. JSP original recordings are renowned for their superb sound quality and unique audio sound. The audio approach is almost unique in the way it pulls together a 'retro' approach whilst at the same time is completely contemporary. The emphasis is on a 'all musicians playing together live in the studio' approach with a hard edged but warm 'big' sound created at the mix. The recording program was born out of the touring and promotion activities which lasted until the mid 1990's. Concerts were promoted at concert halls such as The New London Theatre, The Collegiate Theatre and most famously, at the 100 Club at 100 Oxford Street in London. Many American legends were brought into the country for concerts and tours. Up to that stage only Mississippi and Chicago style blues musicians had generally made it to Britain but JSP was the first to bring over the Rhythm & Blues legends such as Roy Brown, Jimmy McCracklin, Charles Brown, Professor Longhair and others. These musicians had missed out on the 1960's blues boom but were equally important. Many musicians have been 'discovered' or rediscovered by JSP and then went on to bigger deals with larger labels-Larry Garner, Guitar Shorty, Tutu Jones, Jr Boy Jones and many more. Today the label has one of the most important contemporary catalogs that remains under the control of the original label and the music is actively promoted with an ongoing re-issue series utilising nice looking digipak Cds and also digital distribution.
