Ireland. Kelso is considered a pioneer of coordination dynamics, the science of coordination, especially his work elucidating fundamental mechanisms underlying voluntary movements and their relation to the large-scale coordination dynamics of the human brain. His experimental research in the late 70's and early 80's led to the HKB model (Haken-Kelso-Bunz), a mathematical formulation that quantitatively describes and predicts how elementary forms of coordinated behavior arise and change adaptively as a result of nonlinear interactions among components. This empirical and theoretical modeling research caused a paradigm shift bringing dynamics to the fore and laying the groundwork for true collaboration between the disciplines. It also led to conceptual and practical developments in a number of basic and applied fields.
