Na motivy jeho údajného života a díla byla vytvořena podstatná část repertoáru Žižkovského divadla Járy Cimrmana, hry napsané jeho jménem a „vědecké“ přednášky. Byl o něm natočen i divácky úspěšný film Jára Cimrman ležící, spící. Veřejnosti jsou nejznámější autoři her Ladislav Smoljak a Zdeněk Svěrák. Nezávisle na nich se Cimrmanem zabýval i Salón Cimrman Jiřího Šebánka. Jako jeho hlavní předobrazy uvádí autoři dobrušského technologického nadšence a naivistického malíře Aloise Beera, okrajového moravského spisovatele Václava Svobodu Plumlovského a amatérského filosofa a vynálezce Jakuba Hrona Metánovského.

Sie geben vor, Cimrman wissenschaftlich zu erforschen und ihr Publikum mit ihren jeweiligen neuen Erkenntnissen vertraut zu machen. Das Theater entstand 1966 aus einem Radioprogramm, der „Alkoholfreien Weinstube zur Spinne“ („Nealkoholická vinárna U Pavouka“, Erstsendung 23. Dezember 1966), der ersten Premiere „Akt“ folgten in den nächsten 30 Jahren 14 weitere Stücke. Die wichtigsten Charakteristika dieses Theaters sind neben der typischen Form (die Vorstellung ist in ein pseudo-wissenschaftliches Seminar und ein angeblich von Cimrman geschriebenes Stück geteilt) auch der Einsatz von „Nicht-Schauspielern“ und Mystifizierung (Vortäuschung der Existenz Cimrmans). Es zeichnet sich durch stark parodistische Elemente aus. Alle Vorstellungen haben ein Thema: die Erkundung des Werks Cimrmans. Die Schauspieler geben Wissenschaftler – Cimrmanologen –, die in jedem Stück (im Seminarteil) neue Funde und Entdeckungen präsentieren und im Anschluss ein Stück aus der Hand des „Meisters“ aufführen. Die Vorstellungen sind in der Regel lange vorher ausverkauft. Obwohl den Tschechen durchaus bewusst ist, dass Cimrman nie existiert hat, betreiben sie die Mystifizierung, mit denen die Cimrmanologen begonnen haben, mit sehr viel Elan.

Przedstawienia teatralne mają wciąż ten sam schemat - w pierwszej części odbywa się "fachowe seminarium" i poszczególni cimrmanologowie w odczytach zapoznają publiczność z nowymi odkryciami, jakie udało się ustalić na temat życia i dzieła Cimrmana. W drugiej części wystawiana jest sztuka Járy Cimrmana "odkryta" i "zrekonstruowana" przez głównych autorów Zdeňka Svěráka i Ladislava Smoljaka. W Polsce niektóre sztuki na temat Járy Cimrmana gra krakowski Teatr Tradycyjny. Jego imieniem została nazwana jedna z planetoid 7796 Járacimrman.
