- Isobel Katherine Stevens, more commonly known as Izzie Stevens, is a fictional character on the ABC television series Grey's Anatomy. The character is portrayed by actress Katherine Heigl, and was created by series producer Shonda Rhimes. Izzie works at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital as a surgical intern and later resident, with storylines focusing on her relationships with fellow staff members Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, George O'Malley and Alex Karev. She comes to doubt her career in medicine after facilitating in the death of her fiancé Denny Duquette, but returns to the surgical program after donating her $8.7 million inheritance to build a free clinic attached to the hospital. Heigl was critical of the character's development during the show's fourth season, particularly her romance with George. She declined to put herself forward for the 2008 Emmy Awards, citing insufficient material in the role. After media speculation that Izzie would be killed off in the fifth season, the character was diagnosed on-screen with metastatic melanoma (Stage IV). She marries Alex in the show's one-hundredth episode, and afterwards, her tumor is successfully removed though she later suffers from hyperkalemia leaving her in cardiac arrest. ABC have confirmed she will return for the show's sixth season.

Izzie é punida por este ato, sendo temporariamente banida do hospital, e logo após ser readimitda, das cirurgias. Pouco antes do transplante, Denny pede a mão dela em casamento. Horas depois do transplante ele morre devido a um coágulo que saiu de seu coração novo e foi para o cérebro. Denny lhe deixa uma fortuna de aproximadamente nove milhões de doláres. Com esse dinheiro Izzie patrocina a idéia da Dra. Bailey para a criação uma clínica filantrópica, que recebe o nome de Memorial Denny Duquette, e com uma doação anônima ajuda uma garota doente a fazer uma cirurgia muito cara. Izzie pouco a pouco recuperou a confiança que tinha do Chefe, Dra. Bailey e de seus colegas, se mostrando uma médica excepcional, e vencendo todos os transtornos gerados pela morte do seu noivo, os preconceitos e os danos causados pelas punições que recebeu. Mas como se já não fosse o suficiente, logo após todo esse ocorrido ela vai viver problema atrás de problema. Depois da morte de Denny, Izzie acaba se envolvendo com seu melhor amigo George O'Maley, mas o romance não dá certo. Tempos depois, ela volta a namorar Alex Karev. Na quinta temporada Izzie volta a ver Denny, e graças a essas alucinações acaba descobrindo que está com Melanoma(um tipo de câncer) no estágio IV, tendo metástase no fígado e cérebro. Apesar de só ter 5% de chance de sobrevivência Izzie começa a enfrentar uma série de cirurgias e sessões de quimioterapia, radioterapia e imunoterapia para tentar vencer o câncer. Durante esse processo tão difícil ela se distrai organizando o Casamento de Meredith com Derek cuja finalmente serà para ela e o Alex. No final da temporada as coisas se complicam para ela depois de fazer uma cirurgia ariscada, e essa personagem pode tomar um novo rumo na próxima fase do seriado.
