Ixcatec is a language spoken by the people of the Mexican village of Santa María Ixcatlán, in the northern part of the state of Oaxaca. The number of speakers was given to be 119 in the early 1980s. The Ixcatec language belongs to the Popolocan branch of the Oto-manguean linguistic family.

Es hablado por alrededor de trescientos miembros de la etnia ixcateca, que toma su nombre de la población donde se concentran principalmente (Santa María Ixcatlán, en la región de La Cañada, Oaxaca). Se consideraba que la comunidad lingüística ixcateca estaba circunscrita a Ixcatlán, pero los datos censales más recientes señalan que tienen presencia también en Tuxtepec y Nuevo Soyaltepec. La clasificación del idioma ixcateco ha sido compleja. En las primeras tentativas se le intentó asociar al idioma mixteco y al zapoteco. Finalmente se ha llegado a la conclusión de que es una lengua muy cercana al idioma chocho, con el que forma parte del grupo de lenguas popolocanas. Comparte con otras lenguas otomangueanas el carácter de lengua tonal, la distinción de vocales alargadas y cortas. Por lo reducido de su comunidad lingüística, es una lengua en proceso avanzado de extinción.
