Sie erfreute sich vor allem bei Spezialeinheiten größter Beliebtheit. Deshalb wurde die Produktion auch nie eingestellt. Sie wurde aber stetig modifiziert. Die Waffe selbst hat keine Schulterstütze. Der Schütze kontrolliert die Waffe nur durch den Pistolengriff. Die andere Hand kontrolliert den Ladestutzen. Es gibt zwei Hauptvarianten die sich durch unterschiedliche Lauflängen, 470 mm und 508 mm, unterscheiden. Die Variante M37 DS (DS steht für Deerslayer) hat einen veränderten Lauf und kann neben der normalen Schrotmunition auch schwere Gewehrkugeln verschießen. Eine weitere Variante trägt die Bezeichnung LAPD. Sie hat eine veränderte Visireinrichtung und ist für den Polizeieinsatz optimiert.

Etter første verdenskrig var Ithaca Gun Company på jakt etter en pumpehagle som kunne konkurrere med Winchester Modell 1912. De designet en kopi av Remington Modell 17 i 1933, men fant ut at patentene ikke gikk ut før i 1937. De måtte så vente til 1937, og introduserte da Ithaca M37, som opprinnelig skulle hete Ithaca M33. Våpenet ble brukt av US Army under andre verdenskrig, men har også vært populær blant sivile og enkelte politienheter. M37 byttet navn til M87 engang, men ble senere byttet tilbake. Produksjonen stoppet også opp en stund i 2005 ved ett av de mange eierskiftene av selskapet. Produksjonen ble startet opp igjen i Ohio.
