Itchen College is a community sixth-form college on the eastern side of Southampton. Full-time students study a wide range of courses at all levels including A Levels, BTEC, NVQs and GCSEs. In 2007, students achieved a 100% pass rate in 23 subjects at level 3. In 2003, a new initiative at level two, "Learn and Earn", attracted national interest. Itchen College has been the fastest growing college in the South East for three years and was recently cited for its success and high quality management. In addition, the college successfully gained 'Excellence in Ofsted Inspection' in the 2005 Ofsted National Report. Over the past 2 years Itchen College has received 5 Good Schools Guide Awards, the most for any college in the south of Hampshire. Students are mainly from areas of Southampton, east of the River Itchen and its hinterland. A significant number are international students. The ethnic student proportion is 7.8% which is more than would be expected for the college location. The local community can access services in addition to education and training; such as the sports centre, nursery, concert hall, conference suite and sports field. The college launched a new magazine for students and staff in September 2008, in conjunction with the already popular radio station, Itchen College Radio. The magazine will provides the best of News, Entertainment, Lifestyle and Sport. Itchen College hit the headlines during the 2001 General Election after a visit by Tony Blair. Jo Balchin, an 18-year-old studying for three A-levels, asked Mr Blair about the effects of student loans and tuitions fees and whether he was worried that "some kids might consider prostitution or drug-dealing to pay their way through university".
