  • Maharaja Sawai Ishwari Singh (1721 – December 12, 1750) was a Kachwaha ruler of Jaipur from 1743 to 1750. He was the eldest son of Sawai Jai Singh II. One such deed was signed on January 3, 1742, by Thakur of Jhalai, Raoraja of Sikar and Uniara, and Zorawar Singh of Nindar. Rawal Mohan Singh of Chomu also signed this deed. He declared Ishwari Singh "Crown Prince". Ishwari Singh was made king after Sawai Jai Singh II. But the Maharana of Mewar did not support this. Perhaps the marriage of Sisodiya Princess was with the condition that her son would be the next Kachwaha ruler. Internal disputes grew up and Ishwari Singh and Madhosingh I were at war. Ishwari Singh defeated Madhosingh I in 1745 with the help of Ranoji Scindia and Malhar Rao Holkar. But after the death of Ranoji, his son Jayappa Scindia was with Ishwari Singh and Malhar Rao Holkar was with Madho Singh. Again in 1747 Madho Singh was defeated at Rajmahal near Deoli, Rajasthan. The Marathas did not render this help without reason. They used to collect chauth and sardeshmukhi taxes, totalling about 35% of state income, for their support and services. Because Scindia and Holkar were against each other, the Maharana of Mewar called on the Peshwa to intervene. The Peshwa came in person, and at Niwai it was agreed that Madho Singh be given four Parganas. However Ishwari Singh was not present at this settlement, and he started suspecting the intentions of the Marathas. The Peshwa returned in June 1748 and after his return Ishwari Singh did not fulfill the settlement. Again in the rainy season of 1750, Maratha army came to Jaipur to recover their taxes. Holker and Scindia got a commitment from Ishwari Singh to pay Rs. 200000/- for their help to Ishwari Singh in defeating Madho Singh. But this was beyond the capacity of Ishwari Singh. He could not pay the amount and committed suicide on December 12, 1750, by taking poison and bitten with a "Cobra" with three of his wives and one concubine. Next day 20 of his wives died. Madho Singh was made king but public of Jaipur was very much infuriated with this incident as also Madhosingh, who didn't like Maratha interference in the internal matters of Rajputana and wanted to totally drive them out of Rajputana. On January 20, 1751, when 4,000 Maratha soldiers had come to see Jaipur, all the gates of Jaipur were closed, almost the whole city along with the Rajput army attacked the Marathas and killed them inside the city. Almost 3,000 Marathas died and 1,000 were injured. But the Scindia and Holkar were away in "Doab". Later Jayappa Scindia was murdered in Nagaur while trying to collect the hated taxes. In his short tenure Ishwari Singh constructed "Isar lat" or "Sargasuli"(Tower to Heaven) in Tripolia Bazar of Jaipur. He also fought with Ahmad Shah Abdali at the western front for Mughals.
