He played in New Zealand with Waikato in the National Provincial Championship and with the Hurricanes and the Chiefs in the Super 12, where he was the number one halfback for the Chiefs before the arrival of All Black Byron Kelleher. He made three substitute appearances for Ireland on the 2006 Southern Hemisphere Tour and started against Australia in the Autumn internationals. He scored his debut try (coming on as a replacement player at the position of scrum-half for Peter Stringer) in Ireland's 24 February 2007 victory over England.
