On July 4 1982, the four were stopped at an inspection point in north Lebanon by the Lebanese Forces while en route to the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria. It is presumed they were then moved to Phalangist Headquarters in Beirut where they were executed. However, their fate has never been fully determined.

The reported missing diplomats are: Military attaché Ahmad Motevaselian Charge d'Affaires Seyed Mohsen Mousavi Driver, Taghi Rastegar Moghadam Kazem Akhavan, an IRNA correspondent photojournalist Iran called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to clarify the whereabouts of four Iranian diplomats kidnapped in Lebanon. Iran has stated it believes the four were moved alive to Israel in 1990 and are being held there. Israel has stated it does not know what happened to the diplomats and it is believed that they were executed and buried by Lebanese Forces at a site where construction later obliterated their graves. In a May 18, 2006 interview with As-Safir newspaper, Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea revealed that the four diplomats were in fact abducted and killed at a checkpoint near the northern city of Byblos by Lebanese Forces. Iran has maintained that the men might still be alive and held in Israel.
