With Yusef Lateef, Uli Trepte and Mani Neumeier she performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1967 . One of her most enduring collaborations is with the improvising musician Rüdiger Carl.

Begegnungen mit Dollar Brand und den Blue Notes um Chris McGregor (im legendären Jazzcafé Africana in Zürich) und mit Cecil Taylor (1966) führten sie zum Free Jazz. Insbesondere mit ihrem Trio, dem in den späten 1960er Jahren der Schlagzeuger Mani Neumeier und der Bassist Uli Trepte (beide später bei Guru Guru), um 1970 dann der Schlagzeuger Pierre Favre und der Bassist Peter Kowald angehörten, und im anschließenden Jahrzehnt in der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Saxofonisten Rüdiger Carl, z.T. abermals zum Trio ergänzt mit dem südafrikanischen Schlagzeuger Louis Moholo, spielte sie auf vielen Festivals. Schweizer liebt einerseits die völlig freie Improvisation, andrerseits finden sich in ihrer Musik auch Anklänge an traditionellere Formen und Kompositionen von Klassikern wie Thelonious Monk und Duke Ellington einerseits, an die südafrikanische Musik andererseits. Neben ihrer musikalischen Tätigkeit war sie schon früh als Feministin aktiv. Daher war sie um 1980 auch in der Feminist Improvising Group aktiv; ihr Trio mit Joëlle Léandre und Maggie Nicols reflektiert dies noch heute. Daneben ist sie in der Schweizer Jazzszene wichtig als Organisatorin. So ist sie an der Entstehung des Taktlos Festivals (Zürich) und des Labels Intakt Records wesentlich beteiligt. Schweizer wohnt in Zürich-Aussersihl und hat sich bei den Nationalratswahlen 2007 als Kandidatin für die Alternative Liste aufstellen lassen.
