The Highland region was a region of eight districts of which one was named Inverness. The Inverness district included the former burgh of Inverness but was much smaller than the former county.

The county of Inverness survived for registration purposes and, at the same time, the Inverness lieutenancy was defined as having the boundaries of the Highland districts of Inverness, Badenoch and Strathspey, and Lochaber. In 1996, under the Local Government etc (Scotland) Act 1994, the eight local government districts were merged into the unitary Highland council area. Letters patent granting city status to the town of Inverness were sealed in 2001. The letters patent do not refer, however, to anywhere with defined boundaries, and the city is not a statutory local government area.

Loch Ness dehnt sich über 35 Kilometer aus und ist 1,6 km breit. Es erreicht an einigen Stellen eine Tiefe von etwa 250 m. Es ist natürlich für sein legendäres Ungeheuer Nessie berühmt. Es gibt hier dramatische Landschaft und viele Anziehungspunkte. Geschichten ranken sich auch um einige andere Lochs. Das Great Glen fungiert zwischen dem Atlantischen Ozean und der Nordsee nicht nur als Wasserweg über den Caledonian Canal, sondern ist auch ein Pfad für die Vögel. Im Westen von Inverness-Shire liegen North Uist und South Uist, ein Teil der Western Isles. Die Inseln scheinen in der Mitte geteilt zu sein. Moore, Heiden und schroffe Hügel beherrschen den Osten, während der Westen weich ist und von einer sandigen Küste und grüner Weide beherrscht wird. Uist wird nicht so viel wie andere schottische Inseln besucht. Die Lebensmittelversorgung hängt in gewissem Maße von der Fähre ab.
