Jedná se o poslední zcela originální Vernovo dílo. Vyšlo sice již po smrti autora, ale Verne je k tisku kompletně připravil. Další román Maják na konci světa již k tisku připravil autorův syn Michel. Podle některých názorů však Michelovy zásahy do textu byly tak nepatrné, že za poslední Vernovo originální dílo je považován až tento román.
  • L'Invasion de la mer est un roman de Jules Verne paru en 1905. Ce roman est parfois présenté comme le dernier roman de Jules Verne. En fait c'est le dernier dont il a pu corriger les épreuves imprimées. L'auteur l'avait baptisé "La Mer saharienne". Son titre définitif est sans doute du cru de l'éditeur, Hetzel fils. Ce n'est pas sa seule incursion dans l'œuvre. Verne rend le manuscrit le 15 octobre 1904 puis les épreuves corrigées le 12 décembre. Le roman commence à paraître en feuilleton en janvier 1905 dans le Magasin d'éducation et de récréation. Il se termine le 15 décembre de la même année. La première édition date de 1905. L'Invasion de la mer qui se déroule en Tunisie évoque un projet authentique représentatif de l'esprit colonial français. Dans les années 1880, François Élie Roudaire projette de noyer une partie du désert du Sahara sous les eaux de la Méditerranée en creusant un canal depuis le golfe de Gabès jusqu'aux chott. Le projet finit par être abandonné en raison des difficultés mais Jules Verne lui donne une suite romanesque. Le roman a été réédité en 1978 dans la collection 10/18 avec une préface de Léon Blum et une introduction de Francis Lacassin et en février 2003 à Tunis par les éditions Cérès, avec une préface de Jean-Pierre Picot A noter que le roman a été profondément remanié par l'éditeur, Hetzel fils, qui déplace l'action 25 ans en avant, réduit la part de Roudaire et accroît celle des Touareg.
