  • Étymologiquement le mot intinction vient du latin « intinctum, intincto », participe passé du verbe « integere » qui signifie « humidifier. » Il désigne l'action de tremper l'hostie consacrée dans le vin consacré. On peut ainsi communier sous les deux espèces sans avoir à porter les lèvres au calice. Les instructions romaines prévoient que la personne distribuant la communion procède elle-même à l'intinction, c'est-à-dire que seul le prêtre ou le diacre (ou éventuellement le laïque ministre extraordinaire de l'eucharistie) peut pratiquer l'intinction.
