American news media have suggested that the conferences were an attempt to improve the often controversial Unification Church's public image. Irving Horowitz, a professor of sociology at Rutgers University, said that the conferences were "one of the great brilliant marketing strategies in the history of religion. They know how to get them academics; they know how to market them."
