- Intelligent dance music (commonly IDM) is a controversial name for an electronic music genre that emerged in the early 1990s at the end of the rave era. The term IDM is said to have originated in the United States in 1993 with the formation of the IDM list, an electronic mailing list originally charted for the discussion of music by (but not limited to) a number of prominent British artists, especially those appearing on a 1992 Warp Records compilation called Artificial Intelligence. The term is still seen by some as being peculiar to the U.S. but it is routinely used by music journalists, record labels, and fans on both sides of the Atlantic. Many of artists who have been labeled with the term IDM, including Aphex Twin have strongly rejected it. In Britain the works of Aphex Twin are referred to as electronic music or the particular genre such as drum and bass, ambient techno, etc.

Der Begriff ist relativ unscharf und steht nicht für ein einzelnes Genre, sondern für verschiedene Stile elektronischer Musik. C'est un genre musical né à la fin des années 1980 en réaction à la récupération commerciale de la house par quelques producteurs d'Eurodance (comme Pump up the Jam de Technotronic). Ce terme serait apparu sur les listes de discussion du site Hyperreal depuis 1993, suite à un débat sur la définition d'un genre lors de la sortie de la compilation « Artificial Intelligence Vol.1 ». Débat suscité auprès des auditeurs de cette compilation autour des pistes créées par Aphex Twin. L'IDM est en principe une musique rythmée mais qui possède, outre ses qualités hypnotiques propres à la scène techno, des particularités liées au goût de ses auteurs pour l'expérimentation et la recherche musicale. Elle se veut ainsi d'un accès moins aisé que la dance music. Selon certains, à travers la création de cette élite expérimentale, la musique électronique reproduit le parcours de la musique classique qui, à la fin de la première moitié du XX siècle, avait vu naître une musique savante créée par des élites et coupée du grand public. Il demeure néanmoins que la plupart des compositions d'IDM préservent des éléments stylistiques unissant la musique pop, la rythmique jazz et l'inclusion fort mesurée d'éléments à tendance plus bruitiste. L'IDM a longtemps été associée au label Warp et à ses figures de proue Aphex Twin et Autechre. Comme beaucoup d'étiquettes de genres musicaux, le terme IDM tend à disparaître et à se morceler. IDM étant un terme qui sous-entend que le reste de la dance music n'est pas intelligente il tend à être remplacé progressivement par les termes braindance/electronica ou par ses propres sous-genres tels que le Glitch, le Drill'n'bass, etc. D'après le site de Rephlex : « Quand Rephlex a été créé en 1991, les gens disaient que le style de la musique que nous éditions était appelé « techno ». Certains disent que les choses ne sont jamais ce qu'elles ont l'air d'être. On peut dire la même chose de la techno. Au fil des années, les médias ont inventé de plus en plus de termes pour décrire les sous-genres de la musique (intelligent happy hardcore, psychedelic handbag, progressive bluntcore, uplifting trance, etc.). Pour être honnête, ça nous a plongé dans la confusion quant à notre place dans le spectre de la dance. Nous avons alors décidé d'inventer la braindance, un genre qui comprend tous les styles pour simplifier les choses. La braindance n'est pas un genre de musique mais un style de vie. C'est un peu dur à expliquer mais vous pouvez avoir un meilleur aperçu de ce concept en achetant tous nos disques… »

Prekursorami IDM są tacy artyści jak Richard D. James, Autechre, Plaid, Speedy J i inni, którzy znaleźli się na albumach Artificial Intelligence I i II wydanych przez Warp Records. Charakterystycznymi elementami tej muzyki są eksperymenty w tworzeniu dźwięków, a jednocześnie precyzja w ich doborze i kompozycji.

Засновниками IDM вважаються такі музиканти як Richard D. James, Autechre, Plaid, Speedy J, яких можна знайти на альбомах лейблу Warp Records.
