Inner Mongolia is an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China, located in the country's north. Inner Mongolia borders, from east to west, the provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and Gansu, while to the north it borders Mongolia and Russia. La popolazione, in parte di razza mongola, è dedita all'allevamento nomade. Sfruttati anche i giacimenti di carbone e ferro presso Baotou. Il capoluogo Hohhot (330.000 abitanti) si trova a 420 km a ONO di Pechino ed è un notevole mercato agricolo e del bestiame. È sede universitaria e di aeroporto. La principale città della regione è però Baotou (550.000 abitanti) a circa 150 km dal capoluogo. Ha l'aeroporto ed è un importante porto sul Fiume Giallo. Pregevole il mercato della lana, dei cereali e del bestiame e molto sviluppato è anche l'artigianato del cuoio.
