Inland Empire is a 2006 mystery film with elements of horror, written and directed by David Lynch. It was his first feature-length film since 2001's Mulholland Drive, and shares many similarities with that film. It premiered in Italy at the Venice Film Festival on September 6, 2006. The feature took two and a half years to complete, and was Lynch's first film to have been shot entirely in standard definition digital video.

Daar de film moeilijk onder één genre te brengen is, spreekt men onder meer over een abstracte, expressionistische, surrealistische en psychologische film. De film toont een evenwicht tussen enerzijds een vervreemdende en angstaanjagende sfeer en anderzijds een subtiele, dikwijls morbide, vorm van humor. Zowel elementen van een thriller als van een komedie worden naadloos samengebracht. Het vage volgen van een hoofdthema gecombineerd met een aantal bijverhalen, het springen in de tijd en de eigenzinnige manier van filmen (de film werd geheel opgenomen met DV-camera's), geven de film een dromerig karakter. Het is deels een nachtmerrie, doch de uiterst positieve noot aan het eind van de film (een eind waarbij Lynch zich er voor zorgt dat de kijker blijft kijken tot na de aftiteling) geeft het gevoel van een happy end.

- The structure of Inland Empire differs from prior Lynch films, Lost Highway or Mulholland Drive. It is neither a Möbius strip that endlessly circles around itself, nor is it divisible into sections of fantasy and reality. Its structure is more akin to a web where individual moments hyperlink to each other and other Lynch films -- hence the musical number that closes the film which contains obvious allusions to everything from Blue Velvet to Twin Peaks.
