Although it wasn't a big commercial success, it gained some popularity with the furry fandom for featuring anthropomorphic animals. The former Dreamers Guild co-founder Joe Pearce started a new company Wyrmkeep Entertainment to re-release Inherit the Earth again after 2000 for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. He also provided the ScummVM developers with the source code of the SAGA engine, which made ports to even more platforms possible. In March 2007, a Pocket PC edition was released. The official sequel to the video game has come in the form of a webcomic, also called Inherit the Earth, which first appeared in 2005 .

Joe Pearce, ein Mitbegründer von The Dreamers Guild, veröffentlichte mit seiner neuen Firma The Wyrmkeep Entertainment Portierungen der englischsprachigen Version für Linux, Mac OS X und Windows, nachdem er mit langer Verzögerung die Rechte im Jahre 2002 bekam. Laut Joe Pearce dient die Neuauflage als Finanzierung für einen geplanten Nachfolger. Die kartonierten Erstauflagen sind heute relativ rar. Weite Verbreitung erhielt das Spiel durch eine Neuauflage in dem Magazin „Bestseller Games“ - Ausgabe 10 aus dem Trend Verlag (300.000 Exemplare) im Jahre 1996. Da die Charaktere des Spiels anthropomorphe Tiere sind, ist es bei vielen Anhängern des Furry-Fandoms beliebt. Auch haben sich an der deutschen Übersetzung des Spiels Furry-Anhänger beteiligt. Nachdem Joe Pearce den ScummVM-Entwicklern Einblick in den Quelltext des Spiels gewährte, unterstützt ScummVM das Spiel in den Versionen für MS-DOS, Linux, Mac OS, Mac OS X und Windows. Die Amiga- und CD-Versionen werden nicht unterstützt.
