You remember that I had an idea that I was going to write the autobiography of a Communist. ... There lay the trouble. I had planned to write a journalistic account of a strike. But as I thought of it as fiction the thing got bigger and bigger. It couldn't be that. I've been living with this thing for some time now. I don't know how much I have got over, but I have used a small strike in an orchard valley as the symbol of man's eternal, bitter warfare with himself. "

À travers l'histoire de deux « radicaux », des communistes adhérents, appelés les « reds », il nous plonge dans le monde des ouvriers américains dans la morosité de la crise de l'entre deux guerres. Jim, nouvel adhérent et Mac habitué des grèves sont les « héros » de cette histoire. L'auteur dépeint la vie de ces deux radicaux sans prendre parti, si ce n'est le parti des pauvres gens. Le docteur « Doc » est d'ailleurs un personnage important qui nous livre sans doute une partie de l'idée de Steinbeck par rapport aux syndicats et à leurs actions. Doc se pose beaucoup de questions sur la bonne manière de changer les choses, ne trouve aucune réponse, n'est pas convaincu par la manière forte... mais il est là pour ne pas fuir la misère des travailleurs. Le mouvement de grève se déroule dans une communauté de ramasseurs de pommes de la vallée de Salinas en Californie. Très vite, le mouvement prend une tournure violente, la grève étant très peu appréciée des grands propriétaires locaux. Comme souvent chez Steinbeck, la suite des événements s'annonce tragique pour les principaux personnages.
