- Ein Imitator ist eine Person, die die Begabung hat, eine andere Person derart nachzuahmen, dass ein Dritter die imitierte Person wiedererkennt. Oft handelt es sich bei der Imitation um eine Kunstform, die eng mit der Parodie in Kabarett und Satire verknüpft ist. Eine Form der Imitation ist die Stimmimitation. Diese wiederum kann darin unterschieden werden, ob die Sprechweise einer Person nachgeahmt wird, oder deren Gesang. So werden Prominente und Politiker imitiert, um diese in Sketchen auftreten zu lassen oder ihnen satirisch überspitzt Worte „in den Mund zu legen“. Aber auch in Filmen kommen Imitationen vor, zum Beispiel wenn Passagen neu synchronisiert werden müssen, der ursprüngliche Sprecher aber nicht (mehr) zur Verfügung steht. So wurde zum Beispiel bei einer deutschen Neuvertonung der Familie Feuerstein der ursprüngliche Synchronsprecher von einem anderen Schauspieler kopiert, weil Fred Feuersteins „Urstimme“ eine zu hohe Gage haben wollte. Da Filmprojekte sehr teuer sind, kommt es vor, dass Szenen mit Schauspielern, die während der Dreharbeiten verstarben, mit Hilfe von Stimmimitatoren und Körper-Doublen zu Ende gestellt werden (siehe zum Beispiel Natalie Wood und den Film Projekt Brainstorm). Die andere Form der Imitation ist, die äußere Erscheinung einer Person nachzuahmen. Diese oft auch Doppelgänger genannten Künstler sehen einer bekannten Person, mitunter durch Verwendung von Schminke, sehr ähnlich. Der Unterschied zum reinen Double, zum Beispiel für Fotoaufnahmen, besteht jedoch darin, dass der Imitator noch einen Schritt weitergeht, indem er neben der Ähnlichkeit zu einer Person auch immer versucht, deren Eigenarten wiederzugeben. Eine Kombination verschiedener Imitationstechniken wenden beispielsweise Elvis-Imitatoren an, die den bekannten Sänger und Schauspieler in Aussehen, Gesang und Tanz kopieren.

With such indirect references, the entertainment value does not lie so much in the technical achievement of exactly reproducing the voice so much as in merely making it recognizable; the joke lies in the reference to a celebrity, not in its rendition.

Harva edes laulaa. Ulkomaalaisista imitaattoreista teknisesti laajin valikoima on tällä hetkellä selvästi Michael Winslowilla, hän on kehittänyt imitaattori -nimitystä selvästi uusille osa-alueille. Nykyisin hän tekee mm. dubbausta elokuvien päälle eri ääniefektein ja henkilöimitoinnin ja musiikin/soittimien sekoituksella. Merkittävä tyylisuunta on Terry Fatorilla. Hänen erikoisuutena on vatsastapuhujan roolissa laulaa eri laulajien äänellä. America's Got Talent vuonna 2007 oli hänen läpimurtonsa.

Selon l'oto-rhino-laryngologiste Jean Abitbol, les imitateurs ont la particularité d'avoir une corde vocale plus longue que l'autre ce qui leur permet de moduler plus facilement le timbre de leur voix. Le terme imitateur est assez couramment utilisé de façon abusive pour désigner les artistes qui prennent une voix attribuable à une personnalité. On fera la distinction entre l'imitation qui recherche la fidélité par rapport au timbre de voix original et la caricature qui consiste à prendre quelques caractéristiques d'une voix et à créer une variante reconnaissable cependant. L'imitation est plus difficile et requiert plus d'adresse pour atteindre la justesse. Certains spectacles de Didier Gustin sont à ce titre une illustration du travail d'imitateur. La confusion est renforcée par le fait que la plupart des artistes font durant leur carrière de l'imitation mais aussi de la caricature. Yves Lecoq, connu pour être un imitateur chevronné, participe aux Guignols de l'info qui à l'instar du Bébête Show est un spectacle de caricature, où le trait des voix est forcé à des fins comiques. Laurent Gerra, autre imitateur chevronné, passe du coq à l'âne, parfois sans qu'on puisse distinguer ce qui relève de l'imitation ou de la caricature. Grâce à sa chronique quotidienne sur RTL, son nouveau spectacle avec un grand orchestre music hall et ses nombreuses apparitions télévisées, il a été consacré en 2010 comique préféré des français Nicolas Canteloup est également un imitateur populaire grâce à sa chronique quotidienne sur Europe 1, sa participation à Vivement Dimanche, sa participation aux Guignols de l'info et à ses nombreux spectacles. Bien que d'autres imitateurs aient officié avant lui, Thierry Le Luron a donné au genre ses lettres de noblesse dans les années 1970 et 1980. Pour une imitation de chanteur, la caricature sera renforcée en chantant une parodie de chanson plutôt que les paroles originales.
