During the Second World War Duxford played a prominent role during the Battle of Britain and was later used by United States Army Air Forces fighter units in support of the daylight bombing of Germany. Duxford remained an active RAF airfield until 1961. After the Ministry of Defence declared the site surplus to requirements in 1968 the Imperial War Museum received permission to use part of the site for storage. The entirety of the site was transferred to the museum in February 1976. The site now houses the Imperial War Museum collection of nearly 200 aircraft and military and naval vehicles in seven main exhibitions buildings, as well as providing storage space for the museum's other collections. The site provides accommodation for a number of British Army regimental museums, including those of the Parachute Regiment and the Royal Anglian Regiment. In keeping with the site's history many of Duxford's original buildings, such as hangars used during the Battle of Britain, are still in use. The site also features a number of purpose-built exhibition buildings, such as the Stirling Prize-winning American Air Museum, designed by Sir Norman Foster. The site remains an active airfield and is used by a number of civilian flying companies, and hosts regular air shows. The site is operated in partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council and the Duxford Aviation Society, formed to preserve civil aircraft and promote appreciation of British civil aviation history.

Duxford było lotniskiem trawiastym, jednakże stacjonujący na nim Amerykanie wyposażyli je w pas startowy z perforowanej stali. Umożliwiło to wykorzystanie go przez RAF po wojnie jako bazy dla myśliwców odrzutowych Gloster Meteor. W 1951 wybudowano pas betonowy. Stacjonujący wówczas na lotnisku dywizjon 64 wyposażono w samoloty Gloster Javelin. Kiedy rozpoczęła się era myśliwców ponaddźwiękowych, ze względu na położenie lotniska nie zdecydowano się na kosztowne modernizacje wymagane dla obsługi tego typu samolotów. Wojsko opuściło Duxford w 1961. Przyszłość lotniska wahała się aż do roku 1977. Proponowano m. in. przekształcenie go w ośrodek sportowy i więzienie. W 1977 Duxford przekształcono w muzeum lotnictwa. Dziś można w Duxford podziwiać kolekcję lotniczą obejmującą zarówno samoloty z okresu I i II wojny światowej jak i egzemplarze wojskowych i cywilnych maszyn odrzutowych, m. in. : Concorde'a, bombowiec Vulcan, różne modele pasażerskich Avro. Bogata kolekcja samolotów amerykańskich obejmuje m. in. : B17, B29, B52, Blackbirda, F15 i wiele innych maszyn. Muzeum posiada także hangar z ekspozycją broni lądowej, prezentującą m. in. wiele egzemplarzy czołgów i pojazdów opancerzonych. Jedną z największych atrakcji Duxford jest możliwość obserwacji procesu rekonstrukcji historycznych maszyn, który jest prowadzony w hangarze dostępnym dla zwiedzających. Muzeum posiada latające egzemplarze takich samolotów jak Spitfire i Hurricane, które biorą udział w częstych pokazach lotniczych. Ciekawostką jest, że Hurricane z Duxford wciąż noszą polską szachownicę z przodu samolotu. Polską szachownicę umieszczono także na symulatorze, w którym można przeżyć lot z okresu Bitwy o Anglię. Również egzemplarz T-34 w hangarze sił lądowych nosi polskie znaki.
