  • The word imaan literally means faith, i.e. , how much a Muslim is within Islam at a specific time. Accordingly, imaan is an important word in Islamic culture, and is to be found in many Arabic names and Islamic organisations unrelated to the group specifically mentioned in this article. Imaan is an advocacy group for LGBT Muslims, mainly British Asians. The group was founded in September 1998 after members responded to a newspaper ad by the founder of the Al-Fatiha Foundation, a similar group operating in the United States. The organization was first called Al Fatiha UK after the US group, but the name was later changed to the Arabic word for faith. Originally a collective of just six members, the group has grown to include almost 300 registered accounts at Imaan's website. Group membership remains anonymous to protect the safety of closeted participants. Imaan has organized three conferences in London on LGBT issues, and participates in the EuroPride March. It is led by Labour politician Pav Akhtar.
