Sin embargo, tras la ocupación austríaca, esto nunca se llegó a consumar. Con la derrota definitiva de Napoleón en 1815, el Congreso de Viena ratificaba la soberanía austríaca en la región y se formaron los reinos de Illyria y Dalmacia, como parte del Imperio Austríaco.

De Illyrische Provincies waren gelegen aan de noordoostkust van de Adriatische Zee, in wat nu Kroatië en Slovenië is. Napoleon slog samman de provinser han erövrat av Österrike och ställde dem direkt under Frankrike. De områden som ingick vid Adriatiska havet var Istrien, Dalmatien, Kroatien sydväst om floden Sava, staden Trieste, Krain, västra Slovenien, områdena kring städerna Gorizia och Gradisca, övre Kärnten, staden Dubrovnik och alla dess besittningar runt Kotorbukten. En huvudstad upprättades i Ljubljana och 1811 beräknade man att provinsen hade 1 504 258 invånare. 1813 förklarade Österrike krig mot Frankrike igen och erövrade provinserna. Kotorbukten hade dock erövrats av Montenegro samma år men var senare tvungna att avträdda landområdet till Österrike. Vid Wienkongressen 1815 återgick provinserna från Frankrike till Österrike. Därefter skapades kungariket Illyrien i Österrike.
