Elle ne joue qu'un rôle assez limité dans l'antiquité grecque, car la présence sur son sol du sanctuaire sacré d'Olympie, près de la ville de Pyrgos, en fait aux yeux des Grecs un territoire neutre. Pendant le Moyen-Âge, elle est une région importante de la principauté d'Achaïe, avec notamment la capitale Andravida et le port principal, Glarentza. Actuellement elle constitue un nome de la périphérie de Grèce-Occidentale.

Przez Elidę płyną rzeki Penejos i Alfejos, głównymi miastami krainy były w starożytności Elida, Pisa i Olimpia słynna z igrzysk panhelleńskich.
