Het totale onderzoeksbudget is ruim 230 miljoen euro (in 2006), waarvan een deel (circa 35 miljoen euro) afkomstig is van overheidssubsidies. De eerste voorzitter en oprichter van de VZW IMEC was Prof. Baron Roger Van Overstraeten, die tot aan zijn dood op 25 april 1999 het centrum sterk in de internationale context heeft gelanceerd. Vanaf 1999 was Professor Gilbert Declerck algemeen directeur, tot hij op 2 juni 2009 opgevolgd werd door Luc Van den hove.
