- iCalendar ist ein Standard zum Austausch von Kalenderinformationen und löst vCalendar ab. Er wurde ursprünglich im November 1998 im RFC 2445 definiert, der im September 2009 durch RFC 5545 abgelöst wurde. Der Standard ist auch unter dem Namen iCal (nach dem gleichnamigen Programm) oder ICS (der Bezeichnung der spezifischen Dateiendung) bekannt. Als Internet Media Type wurde text/calendar und als Dateinamenserweiterung ics definiert. In der IETF-Arbeitsgruppe Calsify wird der iCalendar-Standard weiterentwickelt. Der Standard wurde so entworfen, dass er vom verwendeten Transportprotokoll unabhängig ist. So kann zum gemeinsamen Bearbeiten der Daten z. B. auch ein WebDAV-Server verwendet werden. Aber auch einfache Webseiten werden benutzt, um iCalendar-Daten einer Veranstaltung zu verteilen oder die belegte Zeit einer Person zu veröffentlichen. Es ist aber auch möglich, Termine im Personal Area Network – etwa per IrDA oder Bluetooth – zwischen PDAs oder Mobiltelefonen per iCalendar auszutauschen. Mit Hilfe von iCalendar ist es auch möglich, Kalenderinformationen gemeinsam in mehreren Applikationen zu verwenden. Mit xCal existiert eine XML-Umsetzung für iCalendar.
