Common User Access (CUA) is a standard for user interfaces to operating systems and computer programs. It was developed by IBM and first published in 1987 as part of their Systems Application Architecture. Used originally in the OS/MVS, VM/CMS, OS/400, OS/2 and Microsoft Windows operating systems, parts of the CUA standard are now implemented in programs for other operating systems, including variants of Unix. It is also used by Java AWT and Swing.

  • CUA (Common User Access, engl. für Allgemein gebräuchlicher Benutzerzugang) ist eine von der Firma IBM seit 1987 im Rahmen der SAA-Spezifikationen 1989 festgelegte Richtlinie für die Gestaltung von Benutzeroberflächen von Computerprogrammen. Diese Richtlinien wurden ursprünglich in den Betriebssystemen OS/2 (damals noch von IBM und Microsoft gemeinsam entwickelt) und Microsoft Windows angewendet. Teile des CUA Standards sind inzwischen auch in Programmen für andere Betriebssysteme wie Mac OS X, Unix sowie den Bibliotheken Java AWT und Java Swing umgesetzt. Die CUA-Standards enthalten Richtlinien für die Benutzung von Dialogfenstern, Menüs und Tastenkombinationen. Diese Richtlinien sind so einflussreich, dass sich selbst Programmierer daran orientieren, die den CUA-Standard nie gelesen haben. In dieser Richtlinie sind u.a. Tastenkombinationen vorgegeben, um schnell auf Funktionen der Programme zuzugreifen. So sind z. B. viele Tastenkombinationen (+, +, +) des Betriebssystems Microsoft Windows auf diese Richtlinie zurückzuführen.
