Hyman Bass (born 1932) is an American mathematician, known for work in algebra. From 1959-1998 he was Professor in the Mathematics Department at Columbia University, where he is now professor emeritus. He is currently the Roger Lyndon Collegiate Professor of Mathematics and Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Michigan.

Seit 1999 ist er Roger Lyndon Collegiate Professor of Mathematics und Professor für Mathematikdidaktik an der University of Michigan, wobei er besonders mit Deborah Ball zusammenarbeitet. 1993 bis 2000 war er Vorsitzender des Mathematical Science Education Board des National Research Councils der USA und des Committee for Education der AMS. 1998 bis 2006 war er Präsident der International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI). Auf dem International Congress of Mathematical Education in Kopenhagen hielt er 2004 den Plenarvortrag. Er arbeitete in kommutativer Algebra, war ein Pionier in algebraischer <math>K</math>-Theorie und beschäftigte sich mit dem „Congruence Subgroup Problem“ und in Zusammenhang damit der Darstellung von Gruppen in Bäumen. Bass war 2001 bis 2002 Präsident der AMS. 2006 erhielt er die National Medal of Science. 1975 erhielt er den Colepreis in Algebra. Er ist Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Sciences und seit 1982 der National Academy of Sciences. Er war Invited Speaker auf den ICM 1966 und 1974. 1970 bis 1982 war er Mitglied von Bourbaki.
