Humphrey Fortescue Osmond (July 1, 1917 - February 6, 2004) was a British psychiatrist known for inventing the word psychedelic and for using psychedelic drugs in medical research. Osmond also explored aspects of the psychology of social environments, in particular how they influenced welfare or recovery within mental institutions.

En 1953 Osmond provee a Aldous Huxley de varias dosis de mescalina, tras lo que Huxley escribirá su ensayo Las Puertas de la Percepción. Huxley había enviado a Osmond una rima que contenía su propia sugerencia como definición: "para hacer sublime este mundo trivial, tomar medio gramo de phanerothyme" (Thymos significa alma en griego). Osmond murió de una arritmia cardíaca el 6 de febrero de 2004.
