  • The Humanist Society of Scotland (HSS) is a Scottish organisation that promotes Humanist views. The HSS is a member organisation of the International Humanist and Ethical Union. The official symbol of the HSS is an adaptation of the Happy Human symbol which incorporates the Saltire. The society campaigns on a range of political issues, the most significant of these currently being its campaign for secular education. Its campaign to allow Humanist celebrants to conduct legally binding wedding ceremonies within Scotland ended successfully when the first legal Humanist wedding took place at Edinburgh Zoo on 18 June 2005. Eighty-two legal humanist weddings were conducted in 2005: in 2008 this figure rose to 710, more than those conducted by the Scottish Episcopal Church. The society provides its own trained celebrants to conduct Humanist ceremonies including weddings, same-sex commitment ceremonies, funerals and baby-namings. As well as campaigning on political issues, the society publishes a quarterly magazine, Humanitie and holds events related to Humanism, including an annual celebration of Darwin Day on 12 February.
