Die Hochschätzung westlicher Kultur, wie sie von Hu Shi und anderen vertreten wurde, missbilligte er. Anfang der 50er Jahre kritisierte Hu Xiansu öffentlich die damals in der Sowjetunion verbreitete Theorie Lyssenkos, dass erworbene Eigenschaften vererbt würden. Zusammen mit Tan Jiazhen vertrat er die Entwicklung einer auf Genen fußenden Vererbungslehre nach Mendel-Morganschen Regeln. Da sowjetische Dogmen zu dieser Zeit für chinesische Wissenschaftler bindend waren, wurde Hu Xiansu dafür politisch scharf kritisiert.

He established the first plantation for botanical research at Mount Lu in Jiangxi, and initiated or conducted large-scale survey of flora of China. Between 1940 and 1944, he was the founding president of National Chung Cheng University (later known as National Nanchang University). In the 1940s, he played a key role, along with Wan Chun Cheng, in identifying and naming a new living species of Metasequoia previously known only from fossils, in Sichuan, China. In the 1950s, Hu was openly critical of Lysenko's anti-Mendelian doctrines in genetics and agricultural practices, despite heavy Soviet influences and political pressures at that time. The standard author abbreviation Hu is used to indicate this individual as the author when citing a botanical name.

Diplômé de l'université de Berkeley en 1916, il retourne sept années en Chine enseigner à l'École Normale Supérieure de Nankin et y récolte aussi de nombreux échantillons, qu'il envoie à Charles Sprague Sargent. Il retourne en 1923 aux États Unis à Harvard travailler avec John Jack à l'Arboretum Arnold et où il rencontre Woon Young Chun, mais, face aux réactions hostiles de l'administration d'Harvard envers les étudiants asiatiques, il retourne en Chine en 1925. Il a dédié à John Jack le genre Sinojackia de la famille des Styracacées. A partir de 1958, tous ses écrits sont exclusivement rédigés en langue chinoise alors que ses publications antérieures l'étaient souvent en anglais. Il est notamment l’auteur de : Avec Ren Chang Ching (1898-1986), Icones filicum sinicarum 1930; Avec Woon Young Chun (1890-1971), Icones plantarum sinicarum 1927-1937.
