A hospital information system (HIS), variously also called clinical information system (CIS) is a comprehensive, integrated information system designed to manage the administrative, financial and clinical aspects of a hospital. This encompasses paper-based information processing as well as data processing machines. It can be composed of one or a few software components with specialty-specific extensions as well as of a large variety of sub-systems in medical specialties.

In der Folge von immer mehr Übernahmen aus dem angloamerikanischen Sprachgebrauch bezeichnet man KIS häufig als HIS (Hospital Information System). Darüber hinaus beschränkt sich der Begriff im Sprachgebrauch auch häufig auf die computerbasierten Komponenten des KIS. In diesem Zusammenhang spricht man auch von „KIS-Herstellern“ und vom „KIS-Markt“, wobei dann mit „KIS“ in Abweichung von der allgemein anerkannten Definition kein Informationssystem in einem konkreten Krankenhaus mehr gemeint ist, sondern ein Softwareprodukt, das wesentliche Funktionsbereiche eines typischen Krankenhausinformationssystems abdeckt.
  • Un Système d'Information Hospitalier est un système d'information appliqué au secteur de la santé, et plus particulièrement aux établissements de santé. Selon la Circulaire ministérielle numéro 275 du 6 janvier 1989 du Ministère de la Santé français, le Système d'Information d’un établissement de santé "[... ]peut être défini comme l'ensemble des informations, de leurs règles de circulation et de traitement nécessaires à son fonctionnement quotidien, à ses modes de gestion et d'évaluation ainsi qu'à son processus de décision stratégique . " Cette définition réglementaire est cependant plus restrictive que les définitions de référence des systèmes d'information, car elle exclut implicitement les organisations et processus implémentés. Le SIH est une des composantes du Système d'Information de Santé.

Een ZIS omvat minimaal het beheer van administratieve patiëntgegevens ondersteuning van de logistiek van het zorgproces ondersteuning van het facturatieproces aan zorgverzekeraars en patiënten. De exacte inhoud van een ZIS verschilt per softwareleverancier. Het ene ZIS voegt de ondersteuning van laboratoriumprocessen toe, of een EPD. Er zijn tevens ZIS-systemen die de doelstelling hebben alle processen in het ziekenhuis (administratief of zorginhoudelijk) te ondersteunen. Doorgaans bevat een ZIS slechts een gedeelte van de in het ziekenhuis aanwezige gegevens.
