Im Jahre 1994 wurde in dem Stadion eine Renovierung durchgeführt, bei der die Kapazität auf den heute gültigen Wert von zuvor 35.000 Plätzen erhöht wurde. Bei den Renovierungsarbeiten wurde zudem die zuvor vorhandene Leichtathletikbahn entfernt und die Schulen, die das Stadion bis dato als Austragungsort für Wettbewerbe nutzten, wurden gebeten sich einen neuen Ort zur Durchführung ihrer Wettkämpfe zu suchen. Allerdings stellten sich nach der Renovierung bereits am ersten Tag Probleme mit dem Rasen ein. Alex Ferguson, Trainer von Manchester United, bemerkte nach einem Gastspiel seines Vereines in diesem Stadion, dass der Rasen uneben, sandig und sehr glatt war, sodass sich die Spieler schnell verletzten können. Wenig später wurde dieses Problem behoben, da man die Spielfläche erneuerte. Im Hong Kong Stadium finden neben Fußballspielen auch Spiele des Rugbysports statt. Das Stadion ist als ein Austragungsort für die Rugby-Weltmeisterschaft 2019 geplant, die in Japan, Singapur und Hongkong stattfinden wird. Für dieses Event soll die Kapazität des Stadions auf ungefähr 50.000 Plätze angehoben werden. Ferner findet im Hong Kong Stadium jedes Jahr die Hong Kong Sevens, das bekanntesteste Turnier im Rahmen der IRB Sevens World Series, statt.
