Hoku, deren Name im Hawaiischen „Stern“ bedeutet, wurde auf der Insel Oʻahu Hawaii als Tochter von Don Ho und mit seiner zweiten Frau Patricia Swallie Choy geboren. Aus dieser Ehe gehen noch zwei weitere Kinder hervor: Kea und Kaimana Grace.
