- The Jin Dynasty(265-420) was one of China's most crucial dynasties. Coming out of the devastation of the Three Kingdoms, the Jin reunified China and brought about a brief period of prosperity between 280 and 304 CE. However, throughout this era the Jin saw many social problems develop, the biggest being the migration of barbarian tribes into Jin terroritory, to the point where they outnumbered the Chinese in some regions. The prosperity of the early Jin was destroyed by the devastating Wu Hu uprising which saw the Wu Hu tribes take control of much of North China, China's heartland at that time, and reduce Jin control to terroritory south of the Huai river. This later era was known as the Eastern Jin. The Eastern Jin was controlled to a large degree by powerful generals such as Wang Bo and Huan Wen who controlled Jin politics. These generals often launched expeditions to reclaim the northern terroritories of China languishing under Wu Hu rule. However, internal division in the dynasty and the weakness of the Southern economy meant that most of these expeditions were unsuccessful. By 383 CE, Jin China was threatened by the Former Qin Empire, who had reunified all of North China. It's problem was now to defend itself, rather than reconquer the North. In the Battle of Fei River, Jin forces prevailed over the much larger Qin army and caused the collapse of Former Qin in the North. Taking advantage of this fact, Jin forces under first Xie An and then Liu Yu launched a series of expeditions that retook much of China's terroritory south of the Yellow River, the traditional heartland. However, the growing power of these generals led to Jin's usurpation by Liu Yu in 420, ending the dynasty.
