Tolkien nimmt eine Schlüsselstellung innerhalb der High Fantasy ein, da er das prägende Werk des Fantasygenres darstellt. Mit dem leicht verspäteten Erfolg des Romans in den 1960ern begannen weitere Autoren, High-Fantasy-Romane zu schreiben. Viele ließen sich dabei von Tolkien inspirieren oder griffen direkt auf seine Motive zurück. So sehen sich etwa die Autoren Raymond Feist, Terry Brooks und Tad Williams in der Tradition Tolkiens; andere Autoren und Autorinnen wie Ursula K. Le Guin, Steven Erikson oder George R. R. Martin nutzen hingegen Tolkiens Vorarbeit für eine eigenständige Bearbeitung der klassischen Motive. Als Vorläufer von Tolkiens Werken können Lewis Carrolls „Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland“ (1865), William Morris’ „The Well at the World’s End“ (1896) und „The Wood beyond the World“ (1894), George MacDonalds „At the Back of the North Wind“ (1871), sowie „The Princess and the Gobblin“ (1872) und T. H. Whites „The Once and Future King“ (1936) angesehen werden. Hier finden sich bereits zahlreiche Motive der Fantasyliteratur, die heute als grundlegend für die High Fantasy gelten.

Někdy můžeme narazit na pojmy „vysoká“ nebo „epická“ fantasy. Jsou to synonyma pro tuto odnož žánru, která si libuje v mnohosvazkových dílech. Základním kamenem hrdinské fantasy je imaginární svět, jen na něm stojí jednota románu a souvislost děje. Proto taková kniha začíná mapou, či souborem map. Obvyklé jsou i slovníčky, rodokmeny, seznamy postav atd.

Joskus termiä kuitenkin käytetään toisessa merkityksessä eli kun halutaan tehdä ero high fantasyn ja low fantasyn välillä. Tällöin lajien ero on lähinnä yliluonnollisten elementtien määrässä. High fantasyssa yliluonnollisten elementtien määrä on suuri, kun taas low fantasy on arkisempaa, eivätkä esimerkiksi taruolennot ole kovin yleisiä.
