Hexham is a market town in Northumberland, England, located south of the River Tyne, and was the administrative centre for the Tynedale district in Northumberland from 1974–2009. Hexham is one of three major towns in Tynedale along with Prudhoe and Haltwhistle, although in terms of population, Prudhoe is Tynedale's largest town. In 2001 Hexham had a population of 11,139.

There are many smaller towns and villages that surround Hexham, such as Corbridge, Riding Mill, Stocksfield, Wylam to the east, Acomb and Bellingham to the north, Allendale to the south and Haydon Bridge, Bardon Mill and Haltwhistle to the west. The closest major city to Hexham is Newcastle upon Tyne which is about 25 miles (40 km) to the east.

Elle a été jumelée avec Saint-Lunaire dans l'Ille-et-Vilaine en Bretagne et est jumelée depuis 1992 avec Noyon dans l'Oise en Picardie ainsi qu'avec Metzingen en Allemagne avec laquelle Noyon est également jumelée. Ce jumelage triangulaire est un des rares existants en Europe et ilpermet aux Anglais, Français et Allemands d'avoir des amis communs dans les trois villes. Ville de 15 000 habitants mais au centre d'un district de 40 000 habitants, Hexham est peu connue des touristes du " Continent ", mais a bien des atouts. Toute proche de Newcastle, une grande métropole d'un million d'habitants, elle est néanmoins nichée dans les vertes collines du Northumberland et est la ville la plus proche du Mur d'Hadrien, sorte de Grande Muraille en miniature qui protégeait l'Empire des barbares pictes (ancêtres des Ecossais) et qui marquait la limite septentrionale de l'influence romaine en Europe. De nombreux touristes viennent visiter le mur, les musées qui le jalonnent et les nombreux châteaux et jardins des environs. Tout autour d'Hexham, les paysages sont magnifiques, sauvages, romantiques. La ville elle-même est très animée. Organisés tout autour de sa splendide abbaye, des commerces de toutes sortes attirent ses habitants et ceux des villages avoisinants, mais une grande zone commerciale s'est également développée au pied de la vielle ville, dans la vallée de la Tyne. Hexham est dotée de nombreux équipements collectifs : son hôpital flambant neuf, le Queen's Hall, grand centre culturel qui contient une salle de spectacle, la bibliothèque de la ville et une salle d'exposition, un complexe sportif, le Wentworth Center, et son stade d'atléthisme le Community Centre, salle communale, parmi d'autres salles mises à la disposition du public son marché aux bestiaux, équipement ultra moderne comprenant une grande salle de réception et enfin la piscine. Au dessus d'Hexham, sur la crête des collines battues par le vent, l'hyppodrome d'Hexham, célèbre pour son steeple-chase, attire les turfistes de toute la région. C'est aussi une très belle ville grâce à ses monuments historiques: le Moot Hall fortification (ou hall de discussion) qui date du Moyen Age la prison, Hexham Goal, également du Moyen Age, le Pont d'Hexham. Superbe exemple d'architecture du XVIII siècle, il enjambe la rivière Tyne. Tour à tour tumultueuse ou paisible elle coule entre des rives naturelles bordées d'un grand parc et d'un golf qui invitent à la promenade. et surtout, la très belle Abbaye (St Andrews) construite par les chanoines normands à la fin du XII siècle. Grand édifice religieux placé au centre ville, elle a beaucoup de points communs avec la cathédrale de Noyon, toutes deux étant de remarquables exemples de gothique primitif. Hexham fut réputée pour ses tanneries mais aujourd'hui, les industries de la villes sont concentrées dans le fond de la vallée. La plus importante est "Egger", une entreprise de fabrication d'aggloméré. Cette grande usine nuit à la beauté du paysage mais elle fournit du travail à un grand nombre d'habitants. Cependant, de nombreux Hexamois travaillent à Newcastle qui n'est qu'à 25 minutes de voiture grâce à la route à 4 voies qui relie les deux villes. Nei pressi del confine con la Scozia, nel corso dei secoli subì numerosi attacchi da parte dei vicini: venne incendiata dalle truppe di William Wallace nel 1297 e di nuovo minacciata da Roberto I Bruce nel 1312. Sede vescovile cattolica, oggi è soprattutto un attivo mercato per i prodotti della regione.
